Frohe Weihnachten!

„Many Tanzanian Christmas traditions are adapted from European culture. For example, we also have the same Christmas songs on the radio like „Jingle Bells“ and in our days we even have „Father Christmas“ in the mall where you can take a picture with him.

Our decoration for sure is adapted to the weather, we have many flowers but also colorful lights. For sure Christmas is a holiday for the family to come together. So many people from the city travel to the villages to see their siblings and relatives. So, this is also the time in the year when the bus fare becomes very high.

We celebrate Christmas at the 25th and 26th of December. In the morning we go to church, where we do drama about the story of Jesus. The mass is always filled with singing and a lot of joy.

Then after mass we prepare food. After eating we go out to different places. Some do things for fun like meeting friends or go to swimming areas.

Others go to charity places, like to go to see poor children and those who live hard life like orphans. We always donate what we have and go and see them to have fun together.

After that we just go back home and rest waiting for the 26th of December – boxing day.

Christmas for us Christians is full of happiness and joy. Depending on how much money you have you prepare a very good meal because you buy meat or in the villages you slaughter a goat, cow, chicken or pig depending on the financial state of the family. We eat special delicious food such as pilau, biriyani, chips and all kinds of meat. In the villages they use to drink self-brewed local beers for example made from bananas.

Christmas is also a time when you buy and get new clothes especially for the children, that’s a big deal for them.“

Mungu ibariki Ujerumani, Munug bariki wote watakaochangia BILENU. (Gott segne Deutschland.
